Why an Iron Falls Short
A household iron heats unevenly. Irons also can't apply consistent pressure — you're pressing by hand, which means the force varies as you move it around, and it's nearly impossible to press an entire design at once the way a heat press platen does.
The practical result: transfers applied with an iron are more likely to have edges that lift after a few washes, spots that look cloudy or under-cured, and inconsistent color vibrancy across the design.
When an Iron Might Be Okay

- Use the highest cotton/heat setting with no steam
- Press firmly and hold for the full recommended time, moving in small sections with overlapping passes so no area gets skipped
- Use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper between the iron and the transfer
- Press on a hard, flat surface (a countertop under a thin towel works better than an ironing board, which absorbs heat and pressure)
- Expect shorter wash life than a heat-pressed transfer
